NOTES

On December of 2019 five musicians gathered onstage to speak the universal language. Leading the conversation was China’s premier saxophonist Gaoyang Li.

Gao is the first saxophonist from China to gain international recognition in the jazz canon garnering praise from such luminaries as Dave Liebman, George Garzone, and Jerry Bergonzi. He is the first Asian sax master invited to participate in the “United Nations International Jazz Day Global All-Star Concert.”

Musicians today have a treasure trove of decades of the masters' recordings to study and it’s evident Gao has done his homework. It’s also helpful that he’s accompanied by four of the masters who performed on many of those recordings.

Gao’s compositions have a tidal quality to them, an ebb and flow in mood and tempo. The soloists take full advantage of these tides to guide and expand the conversation. The listener encourages the speaker, and the speaker responds. These guys have a lot to say and they say it in a language that anyone can understand.

NOTES

“Pendulum” by Richie Beirach
The pivot point of this pendulum is Richie's main theme that seems to pose a question with a hint of mystery. Swing, funk, and dynamics probe the mystery from every angle always retuning to the question.

“Things Happen in a Convertible" by Tim Hagans
This song embodies the vibe of the classic Blue Note recordings of the early 60’s. Times remembered in black and white fragments that can bring a smile or a tear.

“Round Midnight” by Thelonius Monk
Most often heard as an ensemble piece Gao and Richie approach this as a duet bringing a fresh perspective to this timeless classic

“Sambra” by Gene Perla
The band ends the concert on a festive note with Gene’s “Sambra.” First recorded by Elvin Jones this joyful up-tempo composition is a perfect closing to a memorable tour.
